Capacity Building in Use of Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property Rights
Somaliland is fast losing its wealth of indigenous traditional knowledge (ITK) through rapid generation turnover and limited documentation of ITK. Moreover Somaliland continues to lose substantial opportunities to benefit from innovations and products manufactured from materials derived from the continent, through lack of sound intellectual property rights (IPR) and patenting regulations. The Academy has identified this as an important area of intervention and it will work with other related organizations in the world to consolidate this work.
Capacity Building in HIV/AIDS and other Communicable Diseases
In combating HIV/AIDS as well as other communicable diseases, the Academy is building capacity for forecasting occurrence of disease epidemics and dealing with emerging diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS and diseases that have remained ‘orphan tropical’ such as malaria and arboviruses, and others like Ebola and typhoid, which have been neglected by the world in resource terms (financial resources as well as research and development capacity) and which require special attention in Africa, where their emergencies are most persistent and endemic. The Academy will urge all Somaliland research and prevent these prevailing diseases.
Capacity Building in Sustainable Energy/Environment Development and Use
The Academy will launch new research and development activities to promote and support development and use of energy in sustainable ways. Recognizing that the slow pace of industrialisation in the continent is largely tied to lack of sufficient energy, AOSAD will sustain energy policy research by leading scientists aimed at advising countries on energy development options. Technologies needed to more effectively exploit renewable energy sources will be reviewed and promoted. There will be special emphasis on sustainable production and utilization of wood energy. These will be accomplished through award of research grants to leading experts, workshops, interactive working groups and networking of centres of excellence.
Research & Scientific Policy Advocacy
This programme extends the impact of the Academy through ensuring links between research and development and through public policy advocacy.
An example of a component implemented in this program is SCIENCE FORUM. More recently, the Academy has played a significant role in the ongoing dialogue on sustainable forest management and Environmental sustainbility. AOSAD will continue to further the activites of this programme by launching interventions in other aspects of priority public concerns such as HIV/AIDS and its effect on human development in Somaliland. The programme will remain flexible in addressing topical issues as they emerge, through roundtables, workshops, symposia, etc.
Mobilization and Strengthening of Somaliland Science and Technology Community
This programme aims to promote synergy and interactive linkages with establishments in science and technology policy, research and development, and professional enhancement. AOSAD’s purpose is to promote and support working partnerships among relevant institutions in mobilising the scientific community for greater impact in the continent.
Capacity Building in Basic Sciences
The main focus of the Academy is on improving training and laboratory facilities in schools, universities and research centres, networking among institutions, and campaigns for excellence in basic sciences through awareness and development etc.
Somaliland Science Initiative and Empowerment of women in science and technology
Somaliland young people and women have particularly fallen victim of the myriad societal and economic ills in the continent. Yet Somaliland has so far not given its women the opportunity to fully participate in finding lasting solutions to these problems. The Academy will launch a specific capacity building project to empower society and particularly women in science and technology to be directly involved in critical social and economic development fields where science and technology can make a crucial difference. This will be accomplished through award of scholarships, mentorship of outstanding young women in science and technology, and workshops, interactive working groups and practical association.
School Networking in Somaliland
The programme is aimed to faciliatate networking in regards to information in somaliland schools. In addition to jointly work in partnership and share experiences in teaching and academic excellency.
